What does a Mentor do?Mentors meet with a child (Mentee) once a week for one hour at the school. The Mentee is taken out of the classroom and the Mentor spends one hour doing fun activities, which might include: crafts, board games, sports, talking, reading, and having fun. All materials used are supplied by Big Brothers & Sisters of Brandon. The objective of this program is to raise self esteem, self-confidence, and by doing so keep the child in school. Where?In-School Mentoring is offered in all the elementary and middle schools in the Brandon School
Division, Hazel M. Kellington School in Neepawa, and R.J. Waugh school in Carberry. Why Volunteer?Children who spend time with a mentor gain confidence, acquire new skills, and develop an enhanced capacity to care for others. - 90% of Mentors saw a positive change in the child they were mentoring.
- 88% of students showed improvement in their literacy skills
- 64% of students developed higher self esteem
