History

Fergus Elora Big Sisters has been creating friendships since 1975. In April of 1975, a concerned group of local women wished to investigate the need for a Big Sister organization in the area. A Steering Committee of interested volunteers was formed and a grant from the federal government was obtained to fund a pilot project.

At the conclusion of the pilot project, it was clearly evident that there were a number of young girls in the area who could benefit from the services Big Sisters could offer. As a result, a Board of Directors was formed to replace the Steering Committee and the services of a part-time Caseworker was obtained through United Way funding.

Since that time, much of the finances for maintenance of the organiztaion have come from an active fundraising campaign carried out by the Board of Directors with the help of countless volunteers.

The former Big Brothers Association of Guelph and Wellington County was formed in the fall of 1968.  After a number of years servicing the needs of Little Brothers in the Guelph area, the Board recognized the need to support other boys in the county.  To do this they hired a part time caseworker to work in a satellite office in Fergus.  A committee of Centre Wellington residents joined the Board of Guelph as a subcommittee of the Board to operate the satellite of Fergus-Elora Big Brothers.  This committee has been sucessfully maintaining one-to-one matches, couples matches,  group and mentoring programs to service the boys of Centre Wellington

In 2001, Big Brothers and Big Sisters amalgamated nationally, becoming Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada, creating a standardized system for both Big Brother and Big Sister agencies across Canada .  Since 2001, The Big Brother Association of Fergus-Elora and The Big Sister Association of Fergus-Elora had been exploring ways to work together more effectively and efficiently to meet the needs of the chidren in our community. In January, 2004, theses two agencies amalgamated to become Big Brothers Big Sisters of Centre Wellington ( BBBSCW)

On January 29, 2004, the amalgamation of Big Sisters and Big Brothers was celebrated with an official launch.
