Bowl For Kids February 21, 2010

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BACKING LOCAL WINNER ALWAYS PAYS OFF
With more than 100 local kids actively involved in its various programs, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Centre Wellington makes a positive difference in the lives of kids who need a mentor or a friend.
“When you see the delight and excitement on a child’s face as he or she describes what they have done with their ‘Big’, perhaps learning to ride a bike or baking favourite cookies to share with their class or building a birdhouse, or when a child joins our group program and meets new friends, it’s just tremendous,” says Executive Director, Jane Cooper, who’s been working as the local caseworker for the past 20 years.
But the agency can’t provide its much-needed one-to-one Big Brother Big Sister matches, Go-Girls after school programs, In-school Mentoring or Group programs without the ongoing support of the community it serves. That’s why the annual Bowl for Kids fundraiser is so important.
Thanks to past Bowl for Kids participants, who gathered together a team, got pledges and came out to Woodlawn Bowl for an hour or two of just plain fun, kids in our community have the pleasure of new friendships and somebody they can look up to and rely on,” says Cooper.
The agency has two major goals for this year’s Bowl for Kids campaign: to increase the number of local companies, organizations and individuals involved in the fundraiser; and to meet a targeted $30,000 in donations.
The money will enable Big Brothers Big Sisters of Centre Wellington to grow and develop its programs within the community and to reach kids whom it presently can’t serve.
“That’s really hard, knowing there are kids out there who would like their own special friend and there’s nothing you can do,” says Cooper.
For the past couple of months, we’ve been visiting businesses and other organizations in the community, encouraging them to form bowling teams of six people, each of whom would collect pledges.
And, while each team gets to bowl two games, it’s not really about the bowling, it’s about getting together with friends, family and co-workers to have some fun and, more importantly, to do something good for the kids who need your help.

Bowl for Kids takes place on Sunday, February 21 at Woodlawn Bowl from 9:00 to 6:00 pm. We also have an added a fun, new feature ‘Wii Bowl for Kids’ on Friday, February 19, 2010 from 12:00 to 6.00 pm at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex. It’s easy and close to home!.
Anyone who’d like to participate in this year’s Bowl for Kids and make a difference in a child’s life can contact Big Brothers Big Sisters of Centre Wellington at 787-0106.
