Go Girls!
Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds

What:
Go Girls! Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds is a mentoring program designed for girls between the ages of 12-14. This program typically takes place after school and run for about 2 hours at a time. Making healthy eating choices, participating in active living games and developing a positive self-image are all goals of the Go Girls! program.
Why:
Go Girls! is a preventative program that is designed to give young women the tools needed to make positive choices in regards to peer pressure, relational aggression and dating relationships. The program focuses on the importance of healthy living as a means to foster positive self-esteem
Go Girls! runs for seven consecutive sessions, one day a week. This program is run at a local elementary school in Dufferin County. The program is led by Big Brothers Big Sisters staff, as well as a team of enthusiastic female mentors who have been screened by the Big Brothers Big Sisters agency. The program strives to achieve the following
* To enhance competence, confidence and self-esteem
* To build leadership and life skills
*To provide girls with the tools and information they need to lead a healthy, active lifestyle
Who:
The girls in the program are made students chosen by teachers and the Child and Youth Worker at the school. The following is an example of girls who could benefit from being a part of Go Girls!:
* Girls who are struggling with self-esteem and who would not normally participate in organized activities.
* Girls who could benefit from learning new strategies in relating to peers
in a non-violent and non-aggressive manner.
* Girls who could learn about such issues as how the media influences the choices that we make.
