Hershey to Help Make a Difference in Canadian Communities this Halloween

Partnership will focus on the value of mentoring with launch of the “Making a Difference in Canadian Communities™” program.

Toronto, October 18, 2011 - Hershey Canada and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada have signed a two-year agreement to partner together to promote the value of mentoring at risk youth through the launch of the “Making a Difference in Canadian Communities™” program this Halloween. The campaign will encourage Canadians to support Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada by going to www.bigbrothersbigsisters.ca where they can sign up to become a volunteer, or to make a donation. This information will be highlighted on all Hershey’s® Halloween product packaging this season. Over the next two years, Hershey Canada will also donate $200,000 to support the program.

“We are very excited about this partnership,” says Bruce MacDonald, President and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters. “Having a great partner such as Hershey Canada will further allow us to communicate the impact of mentorship in local communities, as well as contribute much needed funds to help serve more children.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada estimates over 1 million Canadian children could benefit from the guidance of a volunteer adult mentor in their lives. Research shows children and youth who have mentors are more likely to stay in school, less likely to bully or be bullied and more likely to grow into confident adults that give back to their community.

“Strong mentorship builds strong communities,” says Hershey Canada General Manager, Tim Dunigan, “Big Brothers Big Sisters provides children with the necessary support they need to succeed in school and in life and we are happy to help them continue their work to improve the lives of Canada’s youth.”

Currently, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada has over 33,000 youth enrolled in a variety of mentoring programs in over 1,000 communities across the country. However, many children are waiting to be matched with a mentor and many more children are turned away due to a lack of resources to find mentors or a lack of current volunteers.
