What is the In School Mentoring Program?
The In School Mentoring Program is a fun and rewarding program.  It matches an adult volunteer with a child in a school environment.  Building a positive, new friendship strengthens a child’s self-esteem, school performance, & provides a mentor with the chance to re-experience the adventure of childhood.

In School Mentoring is based on the traditional one-to-one Big-Little mentoring relationship but minimizes the time commitment of the volunteer.

Data clearly shows many youths have a desperate need for positive role models.  The most compelling data describes changes to the North American family structure:  the number of single-parent homes has radically increased, as have two-parent working families.  More preventive care is needed, as are support networks….the ISM Program helps fill that void.

How often does the mentor come to the school?

The meetings occur once a week, are one hour in duration, and are held on school property during school time.

What do the mentor and mentee do?

All kinds of activities such as games, crafts, sports, and reading help develop the relationship while fostering children’s skill development, confidence, interest in learning and the importance of education.

Program Objectives:
To motivate the child physically, intellectually and socially in a school setting.
To increase self-esteem, self-awareness, and self-confidence.
To help keep the child in school.

Who couldn’t use a mentor?

The In School Mentoring Program helps kids develop a stronger self image, become more self-reliant, and gives them better coping skills. Someone who spends an hour a week hanging out, making a child feel good about themselves and in the process builds a friendship and a stronger child.
