YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN A YOUNG GIRL’S LIFE TODAY
Go Girls! Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds is a program that targets girls from grades 6 to 8 and is designed to provide them with the tools necessary to assist them in making healthy choices around the issues of physical activity, balanced eating and feeling good about themselves.
Go Girls!
Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds is a program designed to address the physical activity, balanced eating
and positive self-image needs of young women ages 12-14 based on a
group mentoring model.
The program consists of 7 mentoring
sessions conducted over a 7-10 week period. Each session is 1.5-2 hours
in length and is held after school, within school facilities.
The
main goal of the Go Girls! Program is to develop an appreciation of the
benefits of an active, healthy, lifestyle among girls’ aged 12 to 14.
In addition, the program strives to achieve the following key
objectives:
- To support girls and young women in choosing to maintain a healthy active lifestyle;
- To provide girls and young women with the tools and information
they need to choose to lead and maintain a healthy lifestyle; To
enhance competence, confidence and self esteem of girls and young women
regarding healthy active living; and
- To build the leadership and life skills of all program participants.
Since 2007, we have been deploying the Go Girls! throughout our organization. You can
check with your local agency to see if they are offering the program yet or call Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada at
1-800-263-9133 for more information about the program
Go Girls! matches groups of girls with women mentors aged 18 to 26. The key to the program’s success is the relationship that forms between the girls and their mentors. Go Girls! runs for 7 to 10 weeks after school or at lunch time in local elementary schools throughout Grimsby, Lincoln & West Lincoln. Each session is 1-2 hours in length and allows participants to take part in fun, educational and active games, healthy snack breaks and discussions aimed at developing self esteem.
