Sandusk Golf Day

Big Brothers Big Sisters adding golf day to Haldimand county activities

June 25, 2010

HALDIMAND – Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Brant, Brantford, Haldimand & Norfolk will be hosting their first Big Brothers & Big Sisters “Golf Day” at Sandusk Golf Club on July 23. The charitable agency that serves to a population of 235,000 people, including the towns of Jarvis, Caledonia and Hagersville, will once again host a golf event in the Haldimand county after a three-year absence. The agency currently monitors 15 matches in the Haldimand area but Executive Director, Patti O’Reilly sees extensive room for growth in the county.

“We are thrilled to have matches in the counties of Jarvis, Caledonia and Hagersville, but we feel there are opportunities to raise more awareness within these counties. Events like our “Golf Day” should help provide people in these counties the opportunities to learn more about our organization,” said O’Reilly.  Funds raised throughout the day will be used to help support several of the Big Brothers & Big Sisters programs, including: traditional Big/Little matches, Couple matches, In-School Mentoring and Go Girls/Go Guys.

The “Golf Day” on July 23 will differ from other Big Brothers & Big Sisters golf tournaments held in Simcoe and Brantford. The event at Sandusk will not have a tournament structure, so golfers are encouraged to book a tee time at any desired time. Participants will get the opportunity to compete in some of the challenging fun theme holes that will be placed throughout the course. One of the challenges will include the Hamilton Bulldogs’ Closest to the Net Contest. Golfers will try to drive their ball to a hockey net placed out on one of the holes’ fairways. The winner of the contest will receive a Hamilton Bulldog prizes including tickets and a hockey stick.

In Haldimand Norfolk, Big Brothers began in 1975 and Big Sisters in 1979. In December 1983 the two organizations joined and became one service. In 2009 this agency began to service the Brant/Brantford area. The Brant, Brantford, Haldimand & Norfolk agency currently has 27 traditional big/little matches, 11 in-school mentorship matches, 13 co-op matches and nine Go Girls in the Brant/Brantford region.
