In Partnership with:

Opokaa’sin Early Intervention Society

"Tradionally, mentoring was the method by which our young people learned their place and responsibility in society. As urbanization continues, First Nation families are faced with greater distance to extended family and traditional homelands and thus too, acess to our tradional teachers (aunties, uncles, grandparents, elders, healers, spirtual leaders). Opokaa'sin supports its' partnership with Big Brothers& Sisters in strengthening connections for First Nation children here in Lethbridge"

“It is extremely important for the a’sitapiksi (young people) to be lead by role models from our own communities, it gives them strength and the will to succeed. It is even greater to be the one to help them get there!”

Why is there an increasing need for Aboriginal mentors?

Aboriginal youth, like non-Aboriginal youth in our community, experience a variety of challenges. We believe that providing Aboriginal youth with an Aboriginal mentor can increase a child’s self-esteem and resilience while providing cultural insight and a sense of belonging.

Make mentoring a cultural experience!

Our agency is partnering with Opokaa’sin and Lethbridge School District No. 51 to provide our matches with opportunities to experience Aboriginal culture.

What about a “1 year commitment”?

The In-School Mentoring program requires 1 school year commitment (September to June).

The Traditional program requires at least a 1 year commitment. Some exceptions can be made.

When are you available?

In-School mentors meet during school hours (M-F 9am-3:30pm).

Traditional mentors meet evenings and weekends.

Weekly Commitment?

Traditional and Big Couples program requires 3-5 hrs a week.

In-School Mentoring program requires 1 hour a week.

Community vs. School?

Traditional mentors have the freedom to go in the community.

In-School mentors stay on the school grounds.
