Volunteer to Start Something
What if every child finished high school, went to college or university, got a job and gave back to our community? Wouldn't that be something?

Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Shore is in DESPERATE need of Support from the Community

The children and youth of the South Shore are at risk of losing one of their biggest supports in their lives, the support of a caring Big Brother or Big Sister.

It is with great regret that I must write this letter. Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Shore is in desperate need to raise $30,000 in the next few months or they will have to close their doors, losing yet another asset in our community. The children and youth will no longer have the support necessary in their lives to help them open their eyes to a world full or possibilities, and to help them dream big!

After 31 years of serving both children and youth in our community, Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Shore is asking their community for help. We support over 50 children and youth of the South Shore through different programs; we do not want to have to turn them and future children away.

Over the past few years, there has been a significant deterioration in the financial situation of the agency due to unsuccessful fundraising events as a result of low turnout. The problem is that revenue from fundraising events has not kept up with the costs to run our programs. The demand for our services from the community has far exceeded our financial capacity to provide them. After consecutive years of declining revenue, the Board of Directors has decided that without a significant investment from the public sector, private sector, and the community, the agency will need to close its doors as the demand for our service has become unsustainable.

Serving as role models, our mentors teach by example the importance of volunteering and giving back, of staying in school, and of having respect for your family, peers and community.  Each time we match a child with a mentor or introduce a group of children to a mentoring program we start something incredible – a life-changing relationship built on friendship, trust and empowerment.

We need your help!  Whether you can donate $10, $1000 or $10,000 please think of our agency and all of the children and youth we have helped over the past 31 years.  Help us continue for another 31 years!  Gather your jeans day money, gather your friends or coworkers and donate today, or create your own fundraiser to help out our cause.  Please contact us by phone at 902-543-4435 or email vanessa.mossop@bigbrothersbigsisters.ca. We have also set up a GoFund Me page to help us reach our goal. You can find our page at gofundme.com/keeping-bbbs-of-south-shore-open.

Thank you for thinking of us in our time of need, and thank you for helping us stay in a community which we love! We want to be here for the children and youth, we do not want to turn them away!
