You have what it takes to become a part of something Big! Our volunteers come from all walks of life but have the common goal of wanting to help a child. You can have your choice of getting involved one-on-one with a child, with a group of children, or indirectly helping all of the kids by assisting with a program or project.
Requirements - a desire to help, ability to work independently, trustworthy, committment to the program of your choice, good time management, no experience nessesary.
Big Brother or Big Sister
- one-one one with a child aged 6 - 16
- community based (can not leave Canada, no overnight visits within first year of being matched)
- spend approximatley 2-4 hours with your "Little" every week
- your role is to be a friend and a positive role model to your "Little"
- opportunities for you to participate in group events and celebrations (Christmas party, camping, zoo trips ect)
- opportunity to volunteer by yourself, with your family
- support and assistance provided by agency
In-School Mentor and Teen Mentor
- one-on-one activities with a school aged youth
- Teen Mentors matched with a child in grades 1-4
- site based (meet with your "Mentee" at his/her school)
- spend approximatley 1 hour per week with your "Mentee"
- do not meet with your "Mentee" outside of school hours or off school property
- your role is to be a friend and a positive role model to your "Mentee"
- opportunities for you to participate in group events and celebrations (Christmas party, lunch parties)
- opportunity to volunteer by yourself, with your baby, with your spouce
- support and assistance provided by agency
Rainbows Facilitator
- work with a small group of children ages 6-14 (4-6 kids per group, grouped by age or type of loss)
- help these children recognize and deal with their emotions pertaining to divorce and/or death, using materials provided by agency (books, games, videos, selected activities)
- site based (meet with the group at their school)
- approximately one hour per week, for a total of 12 consecutive weeks
- either take Facilitator Training (paid for by agency) and lead the group, or assist a trained facilitator
- support and assistance provided by agency
Recruitment and PR
Any or all of the below;
- assist agency staff with planning and implementing special events
- making posters, display boards, phone calls, obtaining permission forms
- public presentations (promoting programs and events to local businesses)
- manning a booth at farmers market, trade show, Crazy Days ect
- creating promotional items for give-aways
- making ads for the newspaper or fliers
- developing new fundraisers and recognition events
Special Events
- set up, take down, of chairs and tables
- Hiway Cleanup (first Saturday in May, approx 7-11am)
- Supervision of kids during outings (camping, paintball, Tim Horton's Camp, ect)
- Awesome Auction - kitchen help - making salads, serving, dishes
- bar tending
- decorating
- gathering donations
- takes place in Stettler first Saturday in June
- Casino (various positions, happens once every 18 months)
- work with agency staff and other volunteers
Driving
- class 4 or higher license to drive agency van
- shuttle service from school to Youth Center in agency van (3:30 - 4:30 Monday to Friday)
- drive agency van for trips (agency pays for your participation in events - skiing, camping, paintball, zoo, corn maze) most trips take place during the summer or school holidays
Board Member
- meet with a group of adults once per month during school months (1st Monday evening of month, usually 2-3 hours)
- work on policies and procedures
- help organize major fundraisers
Facility Maintenance
- "Mr Fix It"
- minor projects such as; fixing door hinges, putting up shelves, patching holes, mowing grass
Technology assistance
- update website
- installing computer software
- computer troubleshooting
- electronic equipment troubleshooting (N64, PS2, video projector)
- teach kids about computers (games, programs, internet)
After-School Programs (3:30 - 6pm)
- read to a group of children
- share your skills and talents with kids (dance, art, leather work, music, woodworking, ect)
- supervision of kids (gym games, drop-in activities)
- Teen clubs (once per week, 7-9pm) fundraisers, trips, leadership skills
