Are you a good friend? Do you have a talent, interest or hobby?
It's as simple as that!
If you are a caring adult willing to help, We Need You!
The first step is to give us a call, email, or drop by the Heartland Youth Center. You will have the opportunity to talk to our caseworker about our different programs and opportunities, then select one that works for you.
Once you have decided what you would like to do you'll be asked to fill out an application form. Depending upon your level of involvement, you may be asked to submit a Child Welfare Check and Criminal Record Check, and/or attend a Child Safety Workshop.
You will become part of a team dedicated to helping the children in our community.
What does a Volunteer Do?
Be yourself! You are not a surrogate parent, councillor, or babysitter. You are a friend. A source of encouragement and support. A game player, spaggetti eater, Lego builder, pool player, bike rider. You are a role model, self-esteem builder, and confidence builder. Or maybe you would prefer to help with fundriasing, writing policies, technical assistance, or building maintenance - your role is defined by what you would like to do.
In-school mentors are required to meet with the child they are matched with once a week, for one hour, at the child's school. Mentors play games, eat lunch, play in the gymnasium, bake cookies, do crafts, and sometimes work on school subjects.
Big Brothers / Big Sisters / Couples Matches are rasked to spend between two and four hours each week with the child they are matched with. They can participate in community events, take a short trip (no overnights for one year), or hang out at home.
