My Mentee and I have now been matched for 4 years. What a wonderful opportunity I have had to get to know my mentee on a very personal level. Although we come from very different backgrounds, value systems, lifestyles and cultures. I believe we have both become better people because of our relationship and the "In School Mentoring Program."

My mentee and I simply have fun. It is our time to express ourselves, act goofy, teach and learn new activites, make a craft or bake somthing good. I do use our time, however, to try to be a positive role model by communicating with my mentee. I always stress positive behaviour thus building her self-esteem. The mentoring program opens a lot of doors not only for the mentees but for the mentors as well.

I have been a mentor to a 12 year old girl for the past two years. She is from a family of four children and is parented by a single mother. She really likes the extra attention and friendship in which a mentor provides for her. We do a lot of reading, crafts and computer work. She looks forward to every Monday and when I arrive she is waiting in the front office with a big smile, has us signed in and is ready to go.
