This program was developed for the kids ages 9 to 12 on the waiting list for a Big Brother or Big Sister. Kids 'N' Kops is based on a partnership between the local agency and the local police department, providing a mini police academy with a recreational component. The educational component is combined with a recreational element that integrates fun through sports and games into the week long experience. It usually takes place during school break or summer holidays. This group program sees officers volunteer to mentor a group of children by teaching them many aspects of police work.
The days are divided into two parts. The morning includes activities with police officers such as crime scene investigations, bomb disposal, tactical rescue, drug and alcohol awareness, canine division and fire investigations. These sessions are delivered by police officers who have knowledge or expertise in a particular area. The afternoon includes physical activities such as sports, hiking or mini golf. These sessions are supervised by agency staff, police, or other volunteers.
