Positive Self-Enhancement

  • In volunteering, you expect you will feel good about yourself by helping a youth. You hope your strengths in working with young people will be revealed and acknowledged.
  • Please note: The desire to feel good about oneself and appreciated for what one does can backfire if your needs for validation interfere with your responding to the needs of your mentee. Sometimes mentors feel unappreciated or ineffective. Sometimes challenges and lulls in a match feel threatening. Are you and your mentee able to share challenges as well as successes? Do you feel as though your mentee is pushing you away, just when you felt the relationship was progressing well and you were appreciating and valuing each other? Program staff see this all the time and can help explain to you how a youth’s distancing is often a sign of a mentor’s success. This may be an important stage in your relationship.
