BIG Spelling Bee

From 2005 to 2012, the Canadian media giant CanWest ran a very successful series of regional spelling bees, called “CanSpell” all across Canada.  These spelling bees were directly linked to the world-famous and most prestigious “Scripps National Spelling Bee” in the USA, and resulted in sending Canadian winners to compete internationally.  When CanWest was dissolved as a company, the regional and Canadian national events were orphaned.  Except for Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, the rest of Canada has not had any contestants competing at the Scripps Spelling Bee since 2012.

In 2016, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada hosted several pilot events in various communities across the country in partnership with Invesco Canada and E.W. Scripps Company to promote academic excellence. This year, the regional spelling bees have been expanded to include Central Ontario, Greater Vancouver, Nova Scotia and the Maritimes.

Schools in NB and PEI are now holding their own in-school spelling bee before the regional bee event. Winners from each school will compete in the PEI and New Brunswick regional event that will take place on February 25, 2017 at the University of New Brunswick in Saint John (hosted by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Saint John).

One winner and an accompanying adult from each regional bee will win an all-expenses paid trip to the Scripps International Spelling Bee to compete in late May, 2017.  The location will most likely be Washington, D.C.
